Adelfa Perez, 75, of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Bronson at Home Hospice Residence. Adelfa was born March 22, 1941 in Pawneee, TX, the daughter of Jose and Porfidia (Martinez) Perez. She worked various jobs during her working career, but she was mainly in Social Work.
Adelfa met and married Jesse Moreno in December 1959 and they lived in Sweetwater, TX before relocating to Three Rivers, TX in 1964. The family moved to Battle Creek in 1972 where they raised 10 children. The marriage ended in divorce in 1979. Adelfa was deep rooted in her faith to God, and was a member of the Potter's House church for many years. She loved gardening, visiting the sick and elderly, and volunteering for Santa's Helper for over 20 years. She also loved visiting her family in Texas every year. She managed the CA Soup Kitchen for 15 years. She was also a translator and advocate for latino families in the community.
Adelfa is survived by her children, sons, James (Cindy Fritz) Moreno and William Moreno; daughters Rita (MSGT Jim) Kerwin, and Rose (Mark) Vincent; son Mario Moreno; daughters Julie Moreno, and Cynthia Ohtusuka Anderson, son Edward (Jay Moore) Moreno, and daughters Susanne (Jeff) Thurman and Jennifer (Todd) Moreno-Patton.
She is survived by her brothers, Joseph (Maria) Perez, Martin Perez, and Mike Perez and sisters Felipa Perez, Annabel (Jose) Castillo, and Maria Ernest. Preceded in death are brothers, Louis (Carmen) Perez, Juan Perez, Domingo (Teresa) Perez, Lionel Perez, Rueben Perez, and Raul Perez. Sister Rosa Perez. Grandchildren, Michelle and Samantha Kerwin, Mark II (Sarah Goldblatt) Vincent and Vanessa (Jeff) Mayhaugh; Emily and Elizabeth Moreno, Toyo, Aki, Mika and Skyler Ohtsuka; Natalee and Keynen Anderson; Ariel and Nick Moreno; Evan and Breyah Patton, Christopher Williams, and great grandchildren Garbiel Vincent, Oliver Smith, and Julia Mayhaugh. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 9:00am to 12:00pm at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm officiated by Lorretta Whitt. Interment will be immediately following at Memorial Park Cemetery officiated by Pastor Mark Hooper. Memorial donations may be made to Santa's Helper in care of Food Bank of Southwest Michigan, Hispanics for Educational Progress Scholarship, and Post/Franklin Community Garden Fund at the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
