Alma Mae {Spindlow} Platz of Otsego, MI
Alma, age 97, died Saturday evening, December 5, 2020 at the Rose Arbor Hospice Residence, Kalamazoo, MI.
Alma was born on May 31, 1923 in Marshall, MI. She was raised in Marshall; graduated from Marshall High School and lived and worked in Battle Creek for most of her life. Alma was employed at Bill Knapps and L.W. Robinson's Department Store of Battle Creek in her early life. She then was employed at Kellogg Company on the "snack pack" line until her retirement 1985. Our most cherished memories were visiting Grandma at the plant; taking tours and watching her work on the line by placing toys in the cereal boxes. We always knew that going to Grandma and Grandpa's house meant there would be a bag of cereal toys and sugar coated raisins from the Raisin Bran line! Even at the end of her life, she still spoke of all her friends and memories at Kellogg.
Alma was proud of being crowned "Marshall's Queen of the Movies" in 1940 which was her junior year of high school and thoroughly enjoyed playing the organ. She loved to take road trips with her husband, Jim and their two daughters. Family and work reunions were her favorites because she loved seeing old friends and extended family. Family holidays were always celebrated at Grandma and Grandpa's home. Many fond memories of walking through the patio with all the baked goods and candy that we were normally full before we reached the front door! Unfortunately, Alma passed away with her meatloaf, mac & cheese and strawberry fluff recipes. Although we all tried to duplicate those family favorites, NOBODY could make them like Alma. She loved the Johnny Carson Show and holidays would not be complete without watching the Show!
Alma was united in marriage to James P. Platz in Marshall on December 21, 1941 and he sadly preceded her in death on May 12, 1996. Alma was also preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce E. Trombley in 2013. Surviving is her daughter, Judy M. Rutherford of Delton, MI; four grandchildren, Cheryl Lindhurst, Cindy Lindhurst, Shannon Trombley and James Rutherford and one great granddaughter, Julie Rutherford.
Private, family interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Jim. The Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek is assisting Alma's family.
