Anna "Grace" Smith, 96, of Battle Creek, died peacefully at home with her family at her side, on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.
Grace was born in Monterey, Tennessee on July 29, 1918, to William N. and Rosetta (Phillips) McCowan. Grace grew up on her parent's dairy farm in Monterey and has resided in Battle Creek since 1939. Grace was an excellent cook and was employed in the test kitchen at Consumer's Power Company and at Northside Manor. At Poulsen Elementary, Grace was a noon hour supervisor and when that closed she continued to work for Pennfield Schools.
Anna Grace McCowan was united in marriage to Roy Avery Smith on May 30, 1936 in Monterey, TN. Sadly she was preceded in death by Roy, her husband of 54 years on April 13, 1991. Surviving are a son, Bill C. Smith of Battle Creek, MI; three daughters, JoAnn Taylor of Marshall, MI, Joyce Jettner of Cincinnati, OH, Jan Heritage of Ceresco, MI; ten grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Phipps and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her husband Grace was also preceded in death by four sisters, Allie Bertha Phipps, Mertie Bell McCowan, Maudie Lee Smith, Hazel Emma Jean Vaughn: and four brothers, Bailey Millard McCowan, Boyd Rosco McCowan, Billy Carson McCowan, Willie Clayton McCowan.
Grace enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, making quilts, feeding her birds and used to bowl in leagues and for fun. Grace's greatest joys in life were cooking, loving and caring for her family.
Friends will be received 2:00-4:00 p.m. & 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2015, at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
