Barbara Jane Connor

August 14, 1946 — January 6, 2025

Battle Creek

Barbara “Barb” Connor, 78, passed away on January 6, 2025, surrounded by her family. Barb was born August 14, 1946 In Lansing, Michigan to Elizabeth “Betty” and Melvin H. “Hub” Musselman. She attended Everett High School, and upon graduation went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in education from Western Michigan University. After moving to Battle Creek to teach, she married fellow educator James Connor in 1970, and together they built a life centered on education, family, and friendships.

Barb was a devoted mother to three daughters: Kelly (Nick) McLaren, Cathy Connor, and Shannon (Jeremy) Roberson. She also cherished her grandchildren—Jordan, Austin, Katie, Camden, Calvin, Griffin, Charlie, and Maggie—who were the light of her life.

A beloved teacher in the Battle Creek Public Schools for many years, Barb dedicated her career to nurturing the minds and hearts of countless children, making an impact on generations of students and creating lasting friendships with her colleagues. Beyond her professional role, she extended her caring nature to her children’s friends and the entire neighborhood, earning her the title of “Mom” to many.

Barb had a knack for making memorable moments. She and Jim loved traveling around Michigan, always on the lookout for the best (or worst) casino giveaways. Their trips weren’t just about fun; they were part of her mission to prepare for the family’s legendary Christmas game using casino treasures as “prizes.” The often-hilarious items—ranging from a set of towels, a candle, or a kitchen appliance to a Franklin Mint plate from the basement—along with teaming up to ensure her daughter, Cathy, never won the "good" ones made the Christmas game a favorite family tradition.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Hub Musselman, and her sisters, Carol (Sam) Brannan and Mary Fishbeck. She is survived by her husband Jim, her daughters, grandchildren, and so many special friends that were more like family.

Barb will be remembered for her kindness and dedication to the people she loved. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Friends and family will be received Monday, January 13th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday, January 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. where the celebration of Barb’s life begins at 11:00 a.m. at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home, 105 Capital Ave NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017.

In lieu of flowers the family requested donations to be made in Barb’s name to the Battle Creek Public Schools Education Foundation, reflecting her commitment to educating others. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the lives she touched. Personal messages for the family may be placed www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
