Barbara Janett Lake, age 96, of Augusta passed away peacefully Thursday evening, February 7, 2019 at the Brookdale Assisted Living in Battle Creek. She was born in Battle Creek on November 1, 1922, the daughter of Allan and Bonnie (Holcomb) Haywood. Barbara graduated from Battle Creek Central High School with the Class of 1941 and retired from Leila Hospital in 1978.
Barbara married George J. Lake in Battle Creek on January 26, 1943; he sadly preceded in death on February 6, 2004. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Keeler of Buffalo, Wyoming and Elizabeth Lake of Augusta; her son, Gary L. Lake of Allegan; two grandchildren, Justin (Zubaida) Keeler of La Center, Washington and Adrian (Kathy) Keeler of Buffalo, Wyoming; six precious great-grandchildren; and her sister Carolyn Rupel of Battle Creek. Barbara was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Allan Haywood, Jr. and her favorite son-in-law, Allen J. Keeler.
After retirement, Barbara and George spent many winters in Tucson, Arizona, enjoying family and new found friends. Over the years, Barbara and George attended the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek and the Holy Way Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona. Barbara loved music and playing the piano and organ, but she truly loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also thoroughly enjoyed the visits from the family dogs. They always put a smile on her face.
The family wishes to thank the employees at Battle Creek Brookdale Assisted Living and SouthernCare Hospice who have demonstrated much love and compassion to Barbara and her family. Words cannot express our gratitude.
Private family services have taken place and Barbara has been interred next to her beloved George at the Fort Custer National Cemetery.
