Barbara Louise (Hughey) Tijerina, a lifelong Battle Creek resident, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility (CCMCF) in the loving care of her family and the wonderful staff of CCMCF.
Barbara was born August 20, 1932, in Battle Creek to Glenn Blenkarn and Lenora (Hurt) Hughey. She was a 1951 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and attended Kellogg Community College in the Banking Curriculum. Barb was employed early in life on her first job at the Kellogg Company and then throughout her career at Michigan National Bank, Security National Bank and Comerica Bank. She was also employed at Robinson’s Department Store in Downtown Battle Creek, Shopper’s Fair and at Burtrum Furs & Leathers as a finisher.
Barbara Louise Hughey married Jose Cantu “Joe” Tijerina September 11, 1955, in Battle Creek, Michigan at United Missionary Church. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Joe on March 24, 2018. Surviving are her children, Mark (Julie) Tijerina of Battle Creek, Patsy (Dennis) Timm of Chapin, SC, Steve (Heidi) Star of Grandville, MI, Diane (Bruce) Gall of Indian Wells, CA, Sandi Tijerina of Plano, TX; ten grandchildren, Nathan Timm, Melissa (Timm) Nilson, Brandon Timm, Nathaniel Tijerina, Joshua Tijerina, Elisabeth (Tijerina) Conable, Andrew Tijerina, Troy Star, Brock Star, Ariana Star; nine great-grandchildren (with another one on the way); a sister, Joyce Holder of Battle Creek; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. In addition to her husband, Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Lenora; and three brothers, Ralph Hughey, Raymond Hughey and Marvin Hughey.
Barb was a faithful member of Battle Creek Friends Church for over 60 years. She enjoyed bowling (which is how she met her husband Joe), she also enjoyed quilting, Bible study, sewing, and playing the accordion and organ. Other highlights she enjoyed were traveling in the RV, camping, spending time with family, reading, cooking, and working on puzzles. She was a great wife, mother, and homemaker. She was very creative and loved her family dearly, including her little cat Zoey. Barb will be remembered as a prayer warrior, a wonderful mother, Grandmother, and a good friend.
Friends and family will be received Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. for the visitation at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. A funeral service to celebrate Barb’s life will be officiated by Pastor John Grafton at Battle Creek Friends Church 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2026. Committal and interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
