Bette M. (Mallernee) Anderson of Battle Creek, MI
Bette, age 98, died Tuesday, July 4, 2017. Born Mary Elizabeth Mallernee on November 20, 1918, to Wynter and Aline Mallernee, she was the fourth of six siblings. Bette graduated from the Battle Creek Academy in 1937 and attended college in Maryland, and Kentucky before graduating in 1944 as a registered nurse from Community Hospital in Battle Creek.
As a young woman Bette was a member of The Sewing Club. Initially it involved sewing, knitting and other productive housekeeping chores, but it soon evolved into bowling, eating out and other fun things. Bette was the last of the original members and she will be missed. The club still meets but it's not the same. Golf was also a passion for many years. She was proud of playing every month for more than a year. Quite an accomplishment during the winter months in Michigan. She also had a great love for the Detroit Tigers and would often talk of taking the train to Detroit with her father, friends, and other family members. While watching a game on television, If things started to go bad during a game, she would turn off the TV to teach them a lesson.
In 1946, she married Roland Anderson, their marriage lasted over 61 years. For the final 15 years of his life Roland was bedridden and Bette his caretaker, with never a complaint. They had one son, Joseph, who passed in 2008.
Bette was a lifelong member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Battle Creek. Her church, family, and friends were the focus of her life. She was loving, quick witted, and a straight shooter. She loved her God and spoke with Him daily. She will be remembered for her love of others and the twinkle in her eyes that lasted over 98 years.
Bette is survived by two grandsons, Michael and Marc, of Florida, and a myriad of nieces and nephews, near and far, who all think they were her favorite.
The graveside service to celebrate Bette's life will be held on Monday, September 11th at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Roland E.
