Betty A. Masters

April 19, 1921 — October 21, 2016

The ever-jubilant Betty A. Masters of Battle Creek, Ml sadly passed away on Oct 21, 2016 at Bickford Cottage. After 95 years, and still sharp, she'll now be with the Lord and playing cards with her husband Charlie in heaven. Betty was born in Marrickville, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on April 19,1921, the daughter of Cecelia (Pennell) and Samuel George Hodgson.
She graduated from Murrum Burnah High School in Harden, N.S.W. and also McQuariest Sydney Hospital and Crown St. Women's Hospital for Nurse Training and Midwifery Nurse Training until 1945.

In a storybook romance, Betty met her American husband Charles Edward Masters in Sydney while he was recovering from wounds received in New Guinea, during World War lI with the US Army. They married on November 18,1944. She came to the United States by on the SS Monterey in April 1946, and became a U.S. citizen on May 28,1954.

Betty started working at the Kellogg Company in 1959 for 22 years before retiring
in 1981.

Charles preceded her in death on April 15,1998. She is survived by her two children, Paul (Lois) Masters and Eileen June (Masters) Lum of Battle Creek, Ml; three grandchildren Mindy (Dave) Ganka, Jason(Kim) Buller, Leigh Masters (John Angelopulos); and four great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Betty loved the beach and going to Florida with Charlie during the winter months after retirement. She enjoyed knitting, oil painting and working with pastels, shopping, golf and having family holiday dinners. She was a fantastic Boy Scout leader. In her later years, she appreciated the piano and loved to sing and hum along to any kind of music. Shrimp and hot chocolate were some of her favorites. Heaven will be a lot livelier with her in town. She will be greatly missed.

A visitation is planned from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 1st at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Homes & Cremation Care. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at the funeral home, with Rev Robert L. Zuhl officiating. Betty will be interred next to her husband at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
