Mary E. "Betty" Smith

Mary E. “Betty” Smith, 92, of Battle Creek, died July 8, 2025 at home under the care of her daughter Terry and Gentiva Hospice. Betty was born August 6, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri. She married DeLos Smith on August 3, 1951. In her younger years, Mary worked at Consumers Power and then managed the Auto Theatre. She worked 32 years at Pediatric Medicine meeting many children and their children at the end of her career.

Betty had a lifelong love of horses. In her 80’s she volunteered for 4 years at the Chef Therapeutic Riding Center. She was even named Volunteer of the season in the Fall of 2011. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Maui, and going on cruises. She loved her dogs dearly and they in turn loved her.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Terry Smith; a son, David and Kelly #2 Smith; three grandchildren, Aaron (Chesnee) Smith, Shawna Sanders and James Bohn and a daughter-in-law, Kelly #1 Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, DeLos in 2004, a son, Kevin Smith and a daughter, Lynn Smith.

A graveside service to celebrate Betty’s life will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2025 in the chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to Gentiva Hospice or to the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center in honor of Betty. Arrangements by the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care.
