Bill R. Carr, age 84, passed away at home on May 28, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer.
Bill was born on September 20, 1933 in Tishomingo, Mississippi, the son of Linton Waldron and Erma Violet (Pennington) Carr. He and his family moved to Battle Creek in 1943. After graduating from Battle Creek Central High School in 1952, Bill went on to serve with the United States Navy Aviation from 1953-1957.
After returning home from his service in Japan, he worked for the Kellogg Company for 37 years the purchasing department. He was also a member of Kellogg 25 Year Club. After retiring in 1990, he worked for Total Foods and with Request Foods as a broker up until 2018. .
Bill married, Patricia Jean "Patt" Sullivan on April 19,1958 in Battle Creek, and they enjoyed 60 years together.
Bill was an avid reader and gardener, a member of the Battle Creek Stamp club, a loyal Michigan State University fan, a history buff and he loved playing Bridge. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf and loved spending time with his family. He was a former member of Westlake Presbyterian Church serving as an elder, deacon and trustee, and later became a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, William B. and Madeline Sullivan; sister- in- law, Joyce A. Buys, and brother-in-law, Harold Browning.
Bill is survived by his wife, Patt; daughters, Susan (Lyle) Liechty of Carmel IN, Lisa Avery of Battle Creek; Leslie (Gary Jr.) Minneman of Battle Creek. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Christopher Carr Liechty, Caroline Sullivan Liechty, Claire Susanne Liechty, John Carr Avery, Chloe Alane Avery and Annabelle Rose Minneman; a sister, Helen Browning of Corinth, MS; Aunt Rella Edwards of Memphis, TN; brother-in-law William (Mildred) Sullivan, Jr., and many nieces.
The family will greet friends on Thursday, May 31st from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Ave, Battle Creek. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 111 Capital Avenue, with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey S. Carlson. Interment will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at 10:30 am, Monday, June 4, 2018. Memorial contributions in Bill's honor may directed to Cancer Care Center, Hospice of Southwest Michigan, or First Presbyterian Church.
