Calvin James "Jim" Frey

Calvin James "Jim" Frey, 91, a resident of Lombard, Illinois and a former resident of Battle Creek passed away on November 28 at Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Illinois.

Jim was born on December 25, 1927 in Battle Creek to Fred and Bernice (Halbert) Frey. He was a 1946 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1952. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and spent thirteen months in Japan. He was a Sergeant in the Military Government in Yokohama.

Jim became a full-time employee at Michigan National Bank in June 1952. He retired as Vice-President in the Trust Department in December 1986.

Jim and Dorothy Marie Cook were united in marriage at Kanley Chapel at Western Michigan University on August 21, 1954. They celebrated 65 years of marriage this past August. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy of Lombard, IL; daughters, Kandi (Ron) Snodgrass of Dublin, OH, Julie (Ron) Whitney of Granite Bay, CA; son, Douglas (Mary) Frey of Downers Grove, IL; granddaughters, Jamie Snodgrass, Alex Frey; grandsons, Jonathan Whitney and Eric Frey; brother, Louis H. (Bev) Frey of Battle Creek and sister-in-law, Marilyn Nicholson of Battle Creek. Parents, Fred and Bernice Frey and sister, Annette (Frey) Craig predeceased him.

Jim and Dorothy joined the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in 1958. He served on Church Council and several church committees. Jim was a former member of the Battle Creek Country Club and the Athelstan Club of Battle Creek. He was a former treasurer and member of the Battle Creek Jaycees. He was a former member of the Cereal City Lions Club and held four officer positions in the Lions Club. Jim served on the boards of the Charitable Union, Good Samaritan Hospice Board, and Oak Hill Cemetery. Jim was a life member of the Binder Park Zoo where he was active in fundraising.

Jim and Dorothy followed Doug's family to Omaha, Nebraska in 2001. In 2012, they all moved to the Chicago area. Jim was interested in flower and vegetable gardening, the stock market, and photography. He was a very kind person. Jim was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jim was born on Christmas Day and passed on Thanksgiving Day.

Jim's family will receive friends 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2019, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. Full military honors and committal will follow at 12 noon at Fort Custer National Cemetery for Jim's immediate family.
