Carl Lewis Harnden

Carl Lewis Harnden, 76, went to be with the Lord on June 13, 2025.

Carl was born December 10, 1948 in Allegan to Lewis and Verna (Brimley) Harnden. As a teenager he enjoyed playing various sports and when he was in the eighth grade, he decided that he wanted to become a physical education teacher. In high school, he played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track. He was awarded a plaque for his achievements in sports; this plaque is in the Gull Lake Athletics Hall of Fame. While attending Kellogg Community College, Carl met his future wife, Joyce, and the two transferred to Western Michigan University, where he graduated with his teaching degree. On October 10, 1970 Carl was united in marriage to Joyce Rose. He was a student teacher for the Gull Lake School District and then he went on to teach physical education and driver's training there for 25 years. He loved teaching and looked forward to it every day. He also coached basketball, baseball, and football. As a child, he attended Gull Lake Bible Church, and as an adult, he continued to attend with his family for over 40 years. He also accompanied high school students on mission trips with Gull Lake Bible Church. After retiring, Carl and Joyce enjoyed traveling and putting puzzles together. He loved sports, fishing, and hunting, and especially loved his family. He will be remembered for his kindness and his ability to make friends with anyone.

Carl is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce Harnden; son, Ryan (Mina) Harnden and grandchildren John and James: daughter, Rachel (Ben) Albrechet and grandchildren, Annika and Alec; brothers Jack, Ken, Cliff, Jeff and their families. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Verna.

A celebration of Carl's life will be held Saturday, July 26 at Hickory Corners Bible Church (13720 Kellogg School Road) from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the family to help cover expenses at the Celebration of Life or to Gull Lake Bible Church.
