Caroline C. (Calloway) "Cabby" Gallagher

May 18, 1916 — March 7, 2015

Caroline C. (Calloway) "Cabby" Gallagher, 98, of Battle Creek died at Bronson at Home Good Samaritan Hospice Residence on Saturday, March 7, 2015.

She was born May 18, 1916 in Wilmette, Illinois to Benn and Marguerite (Pierce) Calloway. Caroline grew up in Wilmette, where she graduated from New Trier High School. In 1938, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Illinois, where she met her husband to be; and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She continued her education at the National College of Education and then taught elementary school in Illinois prior to her marriage.

Caroline was united in marriage to Raymond Keith Gallagher on June 29, 1940 in Hampton, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond K. Gallagher, Colonel U.S. Air Force (ret.) on June 9, 1995. Surviving are her children, Nancy Deo of Redmond, Washington and Vice Admiral U.S. Navy (ret.) Richard K. (Roslyn G.) Gallagher of Midway, Utah; grandchildren, Jennie (Matthew) Deo-Shaw PhD. and Gretchen Deo all of Seattle, Washington, and Dawn L. Smith of St. Petersburg, Florida; and great-grandchildren, Sylvia and Blake Shaw, and Sage and Merritt Smith. In addition to her husband, Cabby was also preceded in death by a sister, Jane Adams; a brother, Cyrus Calloway and a son-in-law, John R. Deo.

Cabby and Skeets were living on base at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. When the women and children were sent back to the states, they didn't know if they would ever see their men again. They were a military family for 30 years. Cabby was a member of the First Congregational Church and its Mary Daniels Circle. She was an excellent bridge player and a longtime member of Battle Creek Country Club. She always had a positive outlook and was always willing to lend a hand, volunteering in the community, at church and as a Gray Lady with the American Red Cross and by typing braille for the blind. Cabby was a wonderful entertainer and loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed spending the winters in Naples, FL and the summers in Old Mission, MI for many years.
She was always interested in everyone's life, remembered all the details and followed up to always be current.

Friends will be received 10:00-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church. Funeral services will be officiated by Rev. Thomas J. Ott in the Miller Chapel at the First Congregational Church 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
