Catherine "Kay" Spear

Catherine "Kay" Spear, age 93, of Battle Creek passed away peacefully at Evergreen Manor on Sunday evening, December 2, 2018. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 8, 1925, the daughter of Frederick and Theresa (VanDemere) Kornoelje. Kay retired from Ralston Purina after more than 36 years of faithful service.

Kay married William T. "Bill" Spear at the First Baptist Church of Battle Creek on September 18, 1947; he sadly preceded her in death on July 26, 2001. She is survived by her son, William R. "Bill" Spear of Battle Creek; her sister, Florence Wright; her brothers, Jim (Caroline) and David Kornoelje; a brother-in-law, David (Betty) Spear; and three sisters-in-law, Mary Kornoelje, JoAnn Spear, and Doris Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister Eleanor Hagen; and her bothers, Fred, Frank, Bob, and John Kornoelje.

Kay was a member of the Covenant Hope Church of Battle Creek (formerly the Christian Reformed Church). She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, decorating her home & taking care of her yard, gardening, and spending her time with family & family gatherings.

The family will receive friends 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 9th at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek where a memorial service to celebrate Kay's life will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 10th.
