Chaney D. Overholts

Chaney D. Overholts, age 74, of Galesburg, Michigan passed away peacefully on Friday evening, April 29, 2022 at the Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo. He was born in Düsseldorf, Germany on August 8, 1947, the son of Howard Dale and Dagmar Charlotte (Bauer) Overholts.

Chaney faithfully served his country as a Sergeant In the United States Army, retiring in 1979 after more than 12 years of service. Chaney served during the Vietnam Conflict and received the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert (Rifle), Good Conduct Medal Clasp, Bronze, 3 Loops. After retiring from the Army in 1979, Chaney joined the ranks at Parker Hannifin in Kalamazoo where he worked for the next 29 years, retiring in 2008.

Chaney continued to serve his country and its' veterans as a member of the American Legion Post #298 and the American Legion Riders of Post # 298. He was also a life-member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, D.A.V., American Legion, N.R.A. and the V.F.W. A true "Man's Man", Chaney loved his country, riding motorcycles, shooting at the range, and spending time with his children & grandchildren.

Chaney married Sheila M. Saunders on July 24, 2019; she survives. He is also survived by his children, Skyler Overholts, Lyndsey Overholts, Joshua (Michal) Overholts and Bryan Overholts; his step-children, Stephanie Kitzmiller-Maris, Rocky Kitzmiller and Jake (Heather) Doran; 11 grandchildren; and his best friend, Preston Mathis. Chaney was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 4th at the Fort Custer National Cemetery. The Celebration of Chaney's Life will continue at 3:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post #298, 228 North 20th Street Springfield, MI 49037. In lieu of flowers, memorials directed to the Vietnam Veterans of America would be appreciated. Arrangements by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek.
