Charles Douglas "Doug" Humes

December 4, 1949 — December 22, 2024

Battle Creek

Charles Douglas Humes, age 75, of Battle Creek, passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor.

Doug was born in Battle Creek on December 4, 1949, the son of Donald and Dorothy (Rolfe) Humes. He was a 1968 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and earned an accounting degree at Kellogg Community College. Doug worked in management at United Steel and Wire in downtown Battle Creek, and then was employed at the Kellogg Company until he retired in December 1999.

Doug’s lifelong hobby and passion was drag racing and all things related to cars! Doug was an avid race car driver and builder. He was a member of the National Hot Rod Association and spent five decades racing at Mid-Michigan Motorplex, US 131 Motorsports Park, and Milan Dragway. In his retirement, Doug traveled south, racing at drag strips in GA and FL, and won a race at the Immokalee Regional Raceway in 2010! In addition to working in his garage and spending time with his car buddies, Doug loved being with his daughters. From playing Barbies, to riding the trails on matching three-wheelers together, to both girls getting Mustangs when they each turned sixteen, Doug was a fun dad! Later he enjoyed being a grandpa to his five grandchildren. He was happy to attend Emma’s sports events locally and got a kick out of his grandkids. He found them so entertaining. The feeling was mutual, as they thought he was so silly. Doug also had a deep love for his many dogs over the years, and all hold a special place in his heart. Doug will always be remembered for his playful joking nature and his love of fast cars.

Doug is survived by his daughter, Heather Lynn (Gary) Rudd of Naples, FL; his grandchildren, Emma Monroe of Battle Creek, MI, Delainey, Garrison, Preston, and Mallory Rudd of Naples, FL; sister, Sandra Parks, of Battle Creek, MI; nieces, Pam Rolfe of Lansing, MI, and Dawn Parks of Battle Creek, MI; and the mother of his children, Margie Humes of Battle Creek. Doug was preceded in death by his daughter, Courtney Marie Humes; and his parents, Donald and Dorothy Humes.
