Cheryl Irene Cox

Jul 18, 1941 — Sep 9, 2026

Cheryl Irene Cox of Battle Creek, MI, passed away on September 9th, 2026 at the age of 85.

She was born to Walter and Dorcas Koons on July 18th, 1941 in Kalamazoo, MI. Her post-secondary journey started at Western Michigan University where she earned her BA in English and literature with plans to become a teacher. She then went on to obtain her Masters from Eastern Michigan University at the age of 21 with 20 extra hours; something she was always proud of.

Her career in education began at Northwest High School in Jackson, MI where she faithfully taught for 27 years. Cheryl’s compassion and dedication to her profession led her on to teach at Baker College for another 5 years before retiring. Throughout her 32 year career in education, many of her beloved students referred to her as “Ma.” In her free time, she enjoyed going to the casino and spending time with friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by the love of her life, Fred Cox, her daughter, Kelly Krueger, and her stepdaughter, Sandy Dolan. She is survived by her son, Bill (Angela) Krueger; stepson Bret Cox; stepdaughter Debbie (Rick) Wells; grandchildren Will Krueger, Sam Krueger, Cheyenne Cox, Zach Cox, Bren Butler, Nicole Butler, Crystal Dolan, Johnny Dolan, and Eric Miller. She’s always been grateful for DeAnn Gumbert for introducing her to her late husband, Fred.

Per Cheryl’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 20th at 1:00 P.M. at Draper Cemetery in Jackson County, MI. Personal messages to the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
