Chester L. "Whitey" Covington, Sr., age 92, of Battle Creek died peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, September 4, 2013 at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. He was born in Shamrock, Oklahoma on October 26, 1920. Chester faithfully served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army during WWII.
Chester married Allie Mae Phillips in St. Louis, Missouri on December 4, 1942; she sadly preceded him in death on January 14, 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Carey (Jim) Clark of South Lyon, Michigan; his son, Lee (Adele) Covington of Marshall; a son-in-law, Bob Whitman of Bellevue; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Chester was also preceded in death by his daughter, Dorothy L. "Dottie" Whitman and a great-granddaughter.
A devout Christian and family man, Chester loved spending time with his family and going to church. He loved his garden and many saw Chester's garden as "his life". Chester enjoyed fishing in his younger years, and was also a racing and NASCAR enthusiast and always enjoyed his time at the Kalamazoo Speedway.
A visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. Funeral services to celebrate Chester's life will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday at The Potter's House Church, 226 Capital Ave. NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider making donations to the Potter's House Church, P.O.
