Christina Ann "Tina" Slayton, 74, of Battle Creek, died peacefully with family and close friends by her side, on Saturday, April 16, 2022, after a long battle with dementia. Tina was born October 18, 1947, and raised in Brunswick, ME. Tina received a B.A. degree in sociology from Wheeling College, Wheeling, W.Va. After a nineteen-year career with the Kellogg Company, which brought her to Battle Creek, Tina then opened her own staffing business, Norrell Temporary Services (later Spherion Staffing). Tina successfully grew and operated her business for over 28 years, becoming a Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certified business in 2007 and winning numerous awards from her corporate office and clients, alike.
Tina was an active member of the community and participated in several organizations and boards including the Battle Creek Rotary Club, where she served a term as president, and the Humane Society of South Central Michigan, where she also served as President.
In her spare time, Tina enjoyed working on stained glass, cooking and entertaining, traveling, canoeing, camping, making jewelry, and shopping. She was known for her great sense of humor and her unique laugh, along with her kindness and generosity.
Tina married Philip W. Slayton on January 8, 1983, in Battle Creek. Tina is survived by her daughter, Heather (Jay) Chick and two grandchildren; Jayson Philip and Amanda Christina, Chick. She was preceded in death by her mother, Priscilla Rowe and her loving husband, Phil.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 24, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Tina's life will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Monday April 25, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan or the Alzheimer's Association.
