Dale Richard Dittmer was born on December 23, 1937. Dale passed peacefully in his sleep on January 17, 2026.
He married the love of his life, Karen, in 1959. They remained happily married for 66 years. Dale was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Lucille Dittmer and his eldest son, Eric Dittmer. Dale is survived by his loving wife, Karen Dittmer, his sons Kurt (Mary) Dittmer and Bret (Jennifer) Dittmer, grandchildren Alyssa (Devin) Hamby, Chase Dittmer, Allie (Joel) Lakatos and Hansen Dittmer. Dale was the second of four brothers and is also survived by his brothers, Jim (Ruth-Ann), Gary (Peggy) and Roger (Pat) Dittmer.
Dale graduated from Scottsville High School, where he graduated in 1955. He pursued further education by obtaining his bachelor’s degree at Western Michigan University, where he played football. Dale went on to earn his master’s in education and a specialist degree from Michigan State University.
Following his educational journey, Dale began his career within the Pennfield School District as a math teacher, football coach and principal for 30 years, before stepping into the role of superintendent at Athens School District where he remained for 15 years until his retirement.
In his retirement, Dale maintained an active role in the community. He was heavily involved in the Athens Community Foundation, Battle Creek Community Foundation and the Pennfield Lions Club. A man strong of faith, Dale was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served in many roles throughout his life. His faith was a guiding force in all that he did.
Dale enjoyed his world travels with his wife and traveled to a plethora of countries. He loved being on the water and was always ready for a sunset cruise around the lake, whether on the pontoon boat or jet-ski. He especially cherished time spent pulling his grandchildren behind the boat and creating lasting memories with them. Dale was deeply proud of his sons and grandchildren, and they were often the heart of his conversations.
Dale will be remembered for his leadership, integrity, warmth and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched as an educator, mentor and devoted family man.
Friends will be received 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek, where a service to celebrate Dale’s life will be officiated by Rev. Lorenzo Small, Sr. at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026.
