Daniel William "Dan" Determann

Daniel William "Dan" Determann, 73, of Battle Creek died peacefully at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence on Wednesday, January 15, 2020.

Dan was born April 17, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Albert Gerheart and Alice Mary (McCarthy) Determann. He graduated in 1964 from Notre Dame High School in Niles. IL. Dan honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, serving in Korea during the Vietnam Era. After the service he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Arts and Linguistics from Northeastern Illinois University. He was employed as a Life Underwriter at Federal Home Life Insurance Company in Battle Creek until they moved their corporate offices. His 12 year teaching career included teaching Social Studies, Economics, American History and World History at St. Philip Catholic Central and throughout many of the school districts in the Calhoun County Area as a substitute teacher.

Daniel William Determann was united in marriage to Sandra Lee Sessions on May 19, 1979 at First Baptist Church in Battle Creek. Surviving are Sandy, his wife of 40 years; two brothers, Francis (Marilyn) Determann of Huntley, IL, John (Linda) Determann of Elk Grove Village, IL; a sister, Mary (Anton) Hecimovic of Billing, MT; ten nieces and nephews, cousins and their families. Dan was preceded in death by his parents.

Dan was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of American Legion Post #298. He was a former member and president of the Battle Creek Jaycees. He loved reading. Dan will be remembered as an outgoing, engaging gentleman always interested in people, hearing their stories and sharing his.

Friends will be received 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where the Knights of Columbus will present honors and a Vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Christopher J. Ankley 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2020. Committal, military honors and interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
