Dan, age 69, died Sunday morning, October 26, 2014 at the Alamo Nursing Home, Kalamazoo, following a battle with cancer and Parkinsons.


Dan, the son of Erle D. and Maryesther (Brandt) Miller, was born on July 9, 1945 in Chicago, IL and was a 1963 graduate of South Haven (MI) High School. He served his country honorably and nobly during the Viet Nam War in the United States Army as a Spec 4. Dan retired in 2006 as the Press Room Supervisor for the Kalamazoo Gazette after 38 years of faithful service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Kalamazoo Chapter. Dan was an active and precise woodworker; was an accomplished guitar and accordion player; took long rides on his Honda motorcycle; he had a sweet tooth that everyone catered to - he always said he never met a cookie he didn't like; he enjoyed boating on Lake Michigan and its South Haven Beach along with camping and fishing; but his true passion in life was spending time with his family, especially the grandkids.


Dan was united in marriage to the former Beatrice Lucille "Bea" Marotzke on August 11, 1978 in Kalamazoo and she sadly preceded him in death this year on February 14, 2014. Surviving are two daughters, Jodi L. (Cliff) Clark of Richland and Holly L. Mulligan of Lansing, MI; two sons, Michael A. Johnson, Jr. of Clinton, TN and Mark J. (Michelle) Johnson of Kalamazoo; four precious grandchildren, Josh and Tony Clark, Elizabeth Johnson and Tyler Barnes; a sister, Susan (Jon) Getman of South Haven; two brothers, Charles Miller of Watervliet, MI and David Miller of Metamora, MI; a niece and nephew and special friends - The Randall Family. Dan was preceded in death by his parents.


The Funeral Service to celebrate Dan's life will be held on Saturday, November 1st at Noon at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, 9170 East D Avenue (M-89) where the family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. A time of fellowship and a luncheon will follow at the Richland Township Hall, 7401 North 32nd Street. Final interment will be held on Monday, November 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI, where the United States Army Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard will bestow full, military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dan's honor may be directed to the Alamo Nursing Home Activity Fund, 8290 West C Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
