Following a courageous battle with cancer, David Louis Burnham, 71, of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026. Surrounded by his family, he reflected with gratitude on a life well lived and often joked, “I am a legend in my own mind.” Dave was a constant source of strength, the calm in a crisis and a trusted mentor who offered guidance and encouragement to others. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he had a way of putting people at ease and bringing them together, whether they were family or friends.
Dave was born on July 10, 1954, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Charles and Margaret Burnham, and was raised in Battle Creek, Michigan. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1973, where he excelled in football and wrestling. A proud Wolverine, he continued his education at the University of Michigan, competing on the golf team, earning the prestigious Fielding H. Yost Award, and graduating in 1977.
Dave began his career at Archway Cookie Company, served as vice president of Burnham Insurance Group, and later worked for Norweco and Strong Products.
In 1978, while dining with his brothers at the Old Buckingham Inn, Dave was instantly taken by Patsy when she approached his table. The two were married in 1979 and built a life centered around family, raising four wonderful children. He deeply cherished his family, especially his grandchildren, and exemplified integrity, kindness, and generosity throughout his life.
Dave found his greatest joy in time spent with family and friends. He never passed up an opportunity to golf, fish, hunt, or travel with those closest to him. A longtime member of the Battle Creek Country Club and the Knife & Fork Club, he valued the friendships and community he built through the years. He lived fully, without regrets, and will be remembered for the time he gave and the love he shared.
Dave will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his wife of 47 years, Patsy; children, Tammy Kerr (Ethan), Nicole Hansen (Mike), Benjamin Burnham (Stephanie), and Abigail Cornfoot (Peter); and 17 grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Grandpa Buck.” He is also survived by his brothers, Charlie Burnham (Ann), Ed Burnham (Judy), and Jim Burnham (Patty); his sister, Jean Williams (Herbie); his sister-in-law, Kathy Thompson (John); his family friends, Jeff Cahill and Theresa Ferrari, along with many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Peggy, and his stepfather, Robert Brown.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
