David Henry Jacob, 79, of Battle Creek, died Jan. 23, 2019, with his wife of 52 years and sons by his side.
He was born in Battle Creek on Aug. 22, 1939, the son of Henry and Marjorie (Black) Jacob. David grew up in Battle Creek where he attended St. Philip Catholic and Battle Creek Central schools, graduating from BCCHS in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for four years, having been stationed in California and Hawaii among other locations before being honorably discharged. After his Naval service, David returned home to assist with the family business, Henry Jacob & Sons Mayflower. He continued working for B&J Moving North American Van Lines from which he retired in 2010.
He married the love of his life, Sandra K. Greensides, on July 30, 1966, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Curt (Sue) Jacob of Hastings; Jeff (Lisa) Jacob of Naples, Fla.; and Scott (Dana) Jacob of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Katie, Matt, Adam, Payton and Camryn; two sisters, Kathy (Fred) Eberhardt of San Antonio, Texas, and Martha (Jim) Nelson of Savannah, Georgia; a brother, Tom Jacob of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
David was an avid golfer and bowler, and was inducted to the Battle Creek Bowling Hall of Fame in 1995. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and also enjoyed memberships at Riverside Country Club, Rotary, Elks, American Legion and Disabled Veterans of America.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. The funeral is planned for 10:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at the funeral home with Military Honors, committal and burial to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
