Derek John Nelson, 40 of Battle Creek, Michigan died at home unexpectedly on Christmas Day, 2021.


Derek was born September 15, 1981 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of Richard Martin and Jeannie Nelson. He grew up in Battle Creek. Derek was currently employed as a floor supervisor at Advantage Sintered Metals, Inc. in Fort Custer Industrial Park.


Surviving are a his children, Devin J. Nelson of New Port Richey, FL, Brianna K. Zuke of Ypsilanti, MI, Derek J. Nelson, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL; his father and stepmother, Richard and Joann Martin; sister, Ashley Nelson; brother, Marky Ward; aunts, Betty Polzin; Bobbie Murphy, Susan Carnell; cousins, Ariel Garcia; Aaron Murphy; Samantha Jones; Heather Jenkins; niece, Serenity Ward; nephew, Ethan Davis. Derek was preceded in death by his mother, Jeannie (Nelson) Ward and grandmother Eppie Nelson


Derek loved watching sports and was an avid fan of all Detroit teams, the Tigers, Lions, Pistons, Red Wings and the University of Michigan teams too. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Derek liked to stay busy and was on-the-go traveling to be with family and friends and seeking new adventures. Derek will be remembered as a fun loving outgoing person who loved everyone and had a ability to make anyone smile that was around him.
