Donald Raymond "Don" Burns, age 80, of Kalamazoo, MI and formerly of Battle Creek, MI died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, September 14, 2016, at his daughter's residence.
Don, the son of James and Mariam (Cable) Burns, was born in Elmhurst, IL on June 30, 1937; moved to Chappaqua, NY; was a 1956 graduate of Horace Greeley High School of Chappaqua, NY and moved to the Battle Creek area in 1963. He retired in 1997 after 29 years of faithful service as a cooker for the Kellogg Company.
Don loved sports and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed football and basketball, especially Collegiate sports. Don also enjoyed animals, candy and making people laugh.
Don was united in marriage to the former Lucy A. Deering in Kalamazoo on June 1, 1957 and she sadly preceded him in death on July 3, 2013. Surviving are three daughters, Lucy J. (Lupe) Garcia of Battle Creek, Paty S. (Mark) Murray of Kalamazoo and Lt. Col. Judy J. Burns USMC (ret.); his son, Michael A. (Margaret) Burns of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Don was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jane Beeman and a brother, James Burns.
As per Don's request, there will be no visitation or service and cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, 1400 West Milham Road, Portage, MI 49024.
