Donald C. Hanna, 93, of Battle Creek died January 18, 2014 at NorthPointe Woods Assisted Living. He was born March 2, 1920 in Bedford Township the oldest son of Glenn and Ruby (Miller) Hanna. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1937 and enlisted in the US Navy in 1941. Don served aboard the Destroyer Escort Earl V. Johnson DE-702 in the South Pacific for four years. His ship was credited with sinking the last Japanese submarine of the war.
After returning to Battle Creek he married Elizabeth (Betsy) Spyker who passed away January 6, 2010 after 64 years of a happy marriage.
In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by their only son Larry Hanna, 57, in 2005 and a brother, John R. Hanna, in 2011. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. J.P. (Doris) Costa of Battle Creek; a daughter âin-law, Shirley Hanna, a grandson Kevin Hanna; a great-granddaughter, Jade and several nieces & nephews.
After 32 years of working with his father and brother, Donald retired from Glenn Hanna & Sons Builders and Custom Kitchens.
His main hobby was collecting antique guns and he was a member of the Antique Gun Collectors of Michigan. He enjoyed the antique business and spent many hours repairing and refinishing furniture.
Betsy and Don had a large collection of Heisey glass and were active in the National Heisey Glass Club. He was past-president of the Kimball House Historical Society and past-president of the Urbandale Kiwanis also a Life member of F&A Masonic Lodge # 207 of Bedford. The Hanna's were long time members of Christ United Methodist Church in Urbandale.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, with Pastor Scott M. Bouldrey of the Christ United Methodist Church in Urbandale officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Don will be interred next to his wife, Betsy, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Church or the Heart Association.
