After a long illness Don Hultstrand, 82, passed away on December 27, 2014 surrounded by his family. Don was born March 9, 1932 in Hibbing, Minnesota to Andrew O. and Myrtle Lillian (Cruikshank) Hultstrand. Don grew up in Hibbing, MN, and was a 1950 graduate of Hibbing High School. He attended Hibbing Junior College and received a Bachelors in Business Administration from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN in 1956. Don served in the United States Army as an Artillery Staff Sergeant from 1953-1955. Don worked in the food packaging industry with the same Company for 42 years, through several name, ownership, and location changes; including Neenah, WI, Philadelphia, PA, Boston, MA, New York City, NY, St. Louis, MO, and Kalamazoo, MI. He retired from James River Corporation in Kalamazoo in April of 1996, where he was employed in Sales Management and Marketing. Shortly after his retirement from James River, he worked as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Field Container Company in Battle Creek, MI. He most enjoyed the challenges his sales career presented.
Don always said that he married well. Don married Sally Magie on July 23, 1955 in Duluth, MN. Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Sally, his children Andrea (John) Gay of Delton, Donald (Lynn) Hultstrand of Edina, MN, Mary Mudgett of Plainwell, Hank Hultstrand of Wayzeta, MN; grandchildren Erin Adams, Ryan Hultstrand, Kathryn Mudgett, and Jack Hultstrand.
Don was a friend of Bill's and was very active with the Alano Club of Kalamazoo. He volunteered at the Kellogg Forest, and the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. Don was an avid golfer, loved to travel, enjoyed the company of lifelong friends, and his two dogs.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 31st from 1-3pm at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue, Richland, MI 49083. Personal memories will be shared at 2:30 p.m. the last ½ hour of the visitation. Donations may be made to the Alano Club, 933 South Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49001.
