Donald Lee "Don" Shivley, age 83, of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence on February 16, 2014. Don was born December 30, 1930, in Youngstown, New York, to Virgil W. and Ethel M. Shivley. His father being in the Army brought him to Battle Creek during World War II. Don graduated from Lakeview High School in 1949, was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves, worked at Michigan Carton Company, Oliver Aviation, as a Patrolman and member of the Dive Recovery Team with the Battle Creek Police Department, and retired from Kellogg's in 1990 with 26 years of service.
Don married Mary Beth Wissink on June 21, 1952; she survives. He is also survived by their three sons and their families: Timothy and Tina of Battle Creek and their children Chelsey, Cortney, Jason and Joshua; Brian and Anne of Lansing and their children, Stephanie and Travis; Michael and Lori of Marshall and their children, Tyler and Reed; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jane and Roberta, and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jay, Gary, and Kirke.
When his boys were young, Don was active in Boy Scouts and Indian Guides. He also served as head timer for the Lakeview High School swim team for twelve years. After retirement, he took up golf which he thoroughly enjoyed with his friends and his grandchildren. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he spent many hours following and bragging about their many education and sports accomplishments. Don was a member of the Kellogg 25-Year Club, First Presbyterian Church, and is a former member of the Cereal City Lions Club.
The family will receive friends 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where funeral services to celebrate Don's life will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014. Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made in Don's name to the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence or the American Diabetes Association.
