Donald Ray "Whitey" Petty

Donald Ray "Whitey" Petty, 94, of Battle Creek died peacefully with his family at his side at Evergreen Senior Care & Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

Whitey was born April 27, 1924 in Sparta, Tennessee the son of Thomas "Eugene" and Anna "Ethel" (Vinson) Petty. He was raised in Sparta and Hopkinsville, Kentucky and then joined the U.S. Army proudly serving his country during WWII in Hawaii and Long Island. Whitey was employed at the Kellogg Company for 28 ½ years, retiring as a foreman in April of 1986 from Plant Services.

Donald Ray "Whitey" Petty was united in marriage to June Hurley on May 28, 1948 in Angola, Indiana. Surviving are June, his wife of 70 years; children, Ronald (Sondra) Petty of Bellevue, MI, Walter (Chris) Petty of Paw Paw, MI, Charlotte (John) Bell of Davison, MI, Vernon (Julie) Petty of Akron, OH, Eric Petty of Lockney, TX, 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great great-granddaughters; and a sister, Dorotha Dowding of Onondaga, MI. Don was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ethel Petty and Jean Thompson.

Whitey was a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club and a former member of the BCTGM Grain Millers Union. He enjoyed hiking, reading, crossword puzzles and watching baseball, especially Tiger baseball. He loved his family and walking the dog. Whitey will be remembered as a Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune expert and a longtime Pancake House breakfast patron with his wife.

Friends will be received 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Friday at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Tom Townsend 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2018. The U.S. Army Honor Guard and Grand Ledge American Legion Post #48 Honor Guard will bestow Military Honors at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, prior to interment.

Memorial contributions in memory of Whitey may be made to the B.C. V.A. for Veterans Personal Care Items. Don's family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Assisted Living and Evergreen Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center for the loving, professional care they provided.
