Doris Jean (Meade) Born of Augusta, MI
Doris passed away peacefully at Glen Arbor Hospice on the seventeenth of September, 2018, at the age of 83.
Doris is survived by her children, Becky (Ken) Nuorala, Marty (Cathy) Born, Vickie (Dave) DeLeon, Tim (Penny) Born, as well as 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Doris was born on January 28th in 1935 in Kalamazoo, MI to Myrtle and Paul Meade. She graduated from Galesburg-Augusta High School in 1953. She married Kenneth Born in 1954. The two built their family home in Augusta. Over ten years, the couple welcomed five children into their home. Her children remember her as a loving, kind, caring and generous mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Doris began working for the Upjohn Company at Brooke Lodge as a server, then transferred to downtown Kalamazoo and became head chef. She retired in December 1993 after 28 years of faithful service and received a special award for 20 years with no lost time.
Doris dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All her family remembers her steadfast support through all significant life events. If anything deemed important to them occurred, they just knew that Doris would be there in support. If there was ever a need for help, whether physical, financial, or just some cooking, they knew they could count on Doris. This generous side of Doris was apparent to the community she lived in as well. The community knew Doris to be one of, if not the most, ardent supporter of Galesburg-Augusta athletics. For 55 years if any family member was involved in a sporting event you would see her in the stands. Basketball was her favorite, and for too many years to remember, she would show up at games with enough cookies for the entire team and coaching staff. When Doris turned 75 the family hosted a birthday party in the high school cafeteria. It was heartwarming to see the amazing turnout by the community, and to see the large number of current athletes as well as past players who attended to show their appreciation and respect to the little old lady that had supported them so well.
Doris is now at rest with her Holy Father and with those who have preceded her in death. Her family will miss her greatly, but will bask in the warmth of her legacy.
The Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 21st at 11:00 a.m. in Augusta Village Cemetery with Mr. Ken Nuorala, officiating.
