Douglas Clayton Rodgers, II., age 71, of Kalamazoo passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. He was born in Kalamazoo on August 14, 1948, and was the son of Douglas C. and Mary Rodgers. Douglas faithfully served two tours in Vietnam with the United States Army, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment "Tomahawks". During his service career, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign & Service Medals, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Mary Rodgers of Kalamazoo; his children, Douglas (Sue Ellen) Rodgers, III. of Kalamazoo, Angel (Jeff) Mann of South Carolina, Lacey (Timothy) Short of Dearborn, and Lindsay (William) Watts of Kalamazoo; an honorary son, Mark Hughes of Kalamazoo; a sister, Delores Taber of Battle Creek; a brother, John Rodgers of Kalamazoo; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers & sisters.
Douglas loved motorcycles and raced in his younger years. He also enjoyed rescuing lost souls and collecting misfit children & animals. Douglas spent a lot of time reading, especially War books, playing cribbage, watching Monday night wrestling, and loved spending time with his family.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate his life will be held 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 23, 2019 at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D. Avenue (M-89) Richland, MI 49083. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the family.
