Dr. Luke Samuel Albert, P.E of Richland, MI and formerly of Kingston, RI
Luke, age 91, died peacefully Monday evening, July 23, 2018 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence, Kalamazoo, MI.
Luke, the son of Grant and Mary (Fox) Albert was born in Palmyra, PA on February 19, 1927. He attended Palmyra High School and Lebanon Valley College from which he graduated in 1950. He went on to receive master's and doctoral degrees (1952, 1958) in plant physiology from Rutgers University. He served on the faculty at the University of Rhode Island in the Department of Biological Sciences for 30 years, retiring in 1990 as professor emeritus. He was a cherished mentor and academic role model for students and faculty alike. Luke served his Country honorably and nobly during World War II in the United States Army as a Medic.
Luke was united in marriage to the former Anna Mary Basehore in Hershey, PA on August 19, 1950 and she sadly preceded him in death on February 1, 2016. Surviving is his daughter, Dr. Ann A. (Brad) Tyler of Richland; his son, Mark J. (Marichu) Albert of Kingston, RI and two grandchildren, Jared Tyler and Marisa Albert. Luke was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Charles Albert.
As per Luke's wishes, cremation has taken place and his and Anna Mary's cremated remains will be buried together in Spring Creek Cemetery, Hershey, PA. Gifts in his memory may be made to the University of Rhode Island, Richard D. Wood Memorial Award for Excellence. Checks should be made to the URI Foundation, to P.O.
