Edna L. "Biff" Hlatko

November 23, 1929 — August 16, 2018

Edna L. "Biff" Hlatko, age 88, of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at the Legacy at NorthPointe Woods. She was born in Danville, Kentucky on November 23, 1929, the daughter of John and Lyda Howard. Edna grew up in the Battle Creek area and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School.

Edna soon met her husband of 70 years, Marshall Hlatko, while staying with her sister, Ann (Lyndall) Lyon. Marshall had just been discharged from the Navy, and they met through a family friend. The two fell in love and were married on June 20, 1948. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary to commemorate their exceptional marriage and unshakable love to each other. Her last request was to have their wedding vows renewed. On Monday, August 13, 2018, Edna and Marshall renewed their vows in the presence of family and many friends. She passed away peacefully three days later.

Edna worked for the Battle Creek Board of Realtors for a short time, but left employment to raise her family. She later worked for the Defense Logistics Information Service at the Battle Creek Federal Center from 1977 to 1988, but always preferred to be called a homemaker, as she loved taking care of her home and her family. Edna was an avid chef with the highest of culinary skills. She loved cooking for her family, and was well known for her dinner parties that she put on for her close friends. Edna loved her family most of all, and took them all to Hawaii and Disney World on more than one occasion.

Edna is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Marshall Hlatko; three children, Chip (Pat) Hlatko, Kathy (Gary) Weemhoff, and David (Debbie) Hlatko; a niece, Cyndie (Doug) Blue; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister and four brothers.

The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 20th at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care where funeral services to celebrate Edna's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 21st. Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials directed to the Shriners Hospitals for Children would be greatly appreciated. Personal messages for the family and/or favorite memories of Edna may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
