Edythe I. (Whitney) Walter 95, of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Sunday, April 19, 2020, at The Legacy at the Oaks.
Edythe was born to Roland L. and Louva M. (Wells) Whitney on June 23, 1924 at her grandparent's farm in Vermontville Township, MI. She moved to Battle Creek at the age of one. She attended Battle Creek schools where she graduated in 1942. Edythe was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone as a Telephone Operator from 1942-45. She then worked at the family business "Walter's Electric Service and Supplies" from 1946 until 1967. Edythe worked at GHS Corp. from 1969 until 1986 when she retired. Edythe also worked alongside her husband, John who went into business for himself "JR Electric" from 1975 to 2000 when they both retired.
Edythe met the love of her life John R. Walter thru her brother Kenneth Whitney. The couple were united in marriage on July 3, 1943 at the home of Edythe's parents in Battle Creek. They built their homestead in Emmett Township in 1952 and lived there together for 57 years until John's death on September 23, 2009.
Edythe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was active in the lady's circle. While her children were in school, she was active in the Wattles Park PTA and the first Wattles Park Women's Club. She was also a leader for her daughters Blue Bird and Campfire groups as well as 4-H. Her hobbies included reading, walking, knitting, sewing, painting, working in her flower and vegetable garden, and her fish pond. She enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and spending time in Florida during the winter months. Edythe will be remembered as always being dressed meticulously, her warm smile, and kind eyes.
Edythe is survived by her beloved family, daughters Julie A Lepper of East Leroy, Rebecca L (Kenneth) Comport of Battle Creek; grandchildren Gregory (Eileen) Fountain of East Leroy and Wendi (Mark) Reynolds-Donahue of Nashville, TN; step-grandchildren Anthony and Nicholas Comport of Kalamazoo, MI.; great-granddaughter Allyson Fountain: and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. In addition to her husband Edythe was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Madelyn L. Briggs, Barbara G. Sines and brothers R. LeRoy, Kenneth F., Richard A. and Gordon L. Whitney and son-in-law Darrell Lepper.
A private funeral for her family will be held at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Due to the COVID-19 virus, a service to celebrate Edythe's life will be held later, when it is safe for Edythe's family and friends to be together.
