Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Tobin, age 89, of Battle Creek died Friday afternoon, June 14, 2013 at Bronson Battle Creek. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on December 19, 1923, the loving daughter of C. Andrew and Ann Margaret (Alberts) Kunkel, and graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central with the Class of 1942.
Betty married James Edward Tobin on December 1, 1945; he sadly preceded her in death on January 26, 1998. She is survived by her children, Patricia (Richard) Barnes of Battle Creek, Michael (Mary) Tobin of Battle Creek, Janice (Davis) Conley of Battle Creek, Teresa Ehlers of Maine, and Karen Koons of North Carolina; her grandchildren, Scott (Jenni) Barnes, Sara (Kraig) Dingman, Nicole (Jason) Imhoff, Michael (Melinda) Tobin, April Conley, D.J. Conley, Stacie (Eric) Cook, Brook Ehlers, Christopher Ehlers, and Kellen Koons; 9 great-grandchildren and two nephews. Betty was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Kunkel, and her great-granddaughter, Miranda Irene Barnes.
Betty was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving for many years as a Eucharistic Minister, member of the CCW and the Legion of Mary. She volunteered with the Leila Auxiliary and received a 4000+ hour pin for her dedicated service. Betty was also a life member of the Purple Heart and DAV Auxiliaries. She volunteered at the VA Hospital and held various officer positions with the DAV.
A visitation will be held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 17, 2013 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Battle Creek. Interment will be held privately at the Fort Custer National Cemetery.
