Elsie Mae (Myers) Shulters

Elsie Mae (Myers) Shulters, 86 of Battle Creek passed away peacefully Sunday, July 5, 2020 at Reflections Memory Care.

Elsie was born at the Nicole's Memorial Hospital in Battle Creek on September 23, 1933, the daughter of Arlon H. (Jack) and Edna Mae (Girnus) Myers. Elsie attended McKinley Elementary in Battle Creek. Her family moved to Marshall, MI in 1947. At 14 Elsie made her quick bread at the State 4-H Club show at Michigan State College and won the title of Champion 4-H Club Baker. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1951. At the age of 21 while working as a secretary at the Oliver Corp. Plant #1, Elsie represented the Carpenters Union and was chosen as queen of the eighth annual Calhoun County union labor picnic at the Calhoun County Fair grounds. The affair drew thousands of union members and their families. She also worked as an Executive Secretary for Kellogg's, a bookkeeper at M66 Bowl and retired in 1994 from the Hart-Doyle-Inouye Federal Center as a Directorate Secretary.

Her husband, Ralph W. Shulters Jr. passed away in 2015. They were married 58 years. Elsie is survived by her daughters, Kelley Shulters and Annette Chapman, son, Kurt Shulters all of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Laura Gaskell, Corey Gaskell, Katie Cohen, Andrea Chapman, Sarah Chapman, Rachael Shulters, Cody Shulters; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Riley of Hamilton, IN, Rheatha Tallenger of Grand Rapids, MI; and brothers Arlon H. (Sonny) Myers of San Antonio, TX, Elden (Dale) Myers of Marshall, MI, Jack (Betty) Myers of Hastings, MI. In addition to her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Dale Hainline and Roger Chambers.

She enjoyed playing bingo, sewing, bowling, baking and gardening, was a Michigan State Spartan fan. But her passion was her family, hosting many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. She treasured her cat (Daisy Mae) who spent many nights sitting on her lap keeping her company.


Service will be held at 9:30 am Monday, July 13, 2020 at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Because of Covid guidelines attendance is limited to 40 people and a mask must be worn.

In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may go to the Alzheimer's Association or the Battle Creek Community Foundation "Miles for Memories Fund".
