Esther Cruz - Laboy

June 13, 1956 — April 8, 2020

Cherished memories of a very dear sister, aunt, cousin and friend...

Esther Cruz LaBoy passed away on April 8, 2020, in the Bronson Methodist Hospital of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

She was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, on June 13, 1956, to Longino Cruz and Reinelia LaBoy. One of four siblings, she was the oldest of the three girls. She often played the role of nurturer, confidant, teacher, and friend.

In 1981, Esther moved to Battle Creek, Michigan -- a place that she called her home. She continued her college education and moved on to work at the Hart Dole Inouye Federal Center. She was active with the local Chambers of Commerce and Historical Society. In her spare time, she had a passion for painting and was an exceptional composer, singer, and guitar player.

While Esther faced many health obstacles and complications over the course of the following decades, she was a fighter until the end. Her love of family and friends gave her the strength to push forward each day.

Esther is survived by her siblings: Jose M. Cruz and Margie Cruz LaBoy; nieces and nephews Solimar, Sacha, Roberto, Xavier, Yamil, Yanitza and Joey; and extended cousins, whom she loved dearly. Esther was also fortunate enough to have created an extended family with the Sharp's: Anna, Jay, and Nicole.

Esther will always be remembered for her warmth, generosity, brilliance, optimism and great, big heart. She set an example of courage and compassion that inspired everyone who knew her. She gave of herself freely; emparting her lessons, love, and offering a safe harbour for those whose life she touched.

For now, we say goodbye. Heaven only knows what's in store for you next!

"I closed my eyes as I wiped away a tear.
I just keep wishing you were still here.
I will hold all the memories deep in my heart,
through these memories we'll never part."

A Memorial service will be held at Hightland Memorial Cemetery in Florida at a later day (TBA)
