Ethel Ann Habucki

Ethel Ann Habucki, age 94, of Battle Creek and formerly of Detroit, Michigan died Monday morning, January 22, 2018 at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital with her beloved daughter, Sandra, by her side as she slipped quietly and peacefully from this world to join her Savior.

Ethel was born in Detroit on July 31, 1923 to John and Angeline (Kapuscinski) Blurok. Ethel grew up in Detroit where she was to be introduced by friends to Edward "Eddie" Habucki at the age of 16. The two married several years later and were Blessed with a baby girl, and their only child, Sandra Joann. Shortly after their marriage and the birth of their daughter, Edward was deployed overseas in Guam with the U.S. Navy, which he served until after wartime.

Edward sadly preceded her in death on July 4, 1978. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Jim) Jasper of Augusta; her three grandchildren, Jeanne (Chris) LaFontaine of Grand Rapids, Jim (Carla) Jasper of Wisconsin, Stacey (Jim) Mahoney of Okemos, and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her role as a home maker, Ethel worked part-time at local schools in the Detroit area, and went on to faithfully serve at St. Mary Queen of Creation Church in New Baltimore, Michigan for 34 years in various clerical roles in the church office. Ethel loved the Lord and her church dearly, attending Mass weekly and working at St. Mary's until the age of 89.

Ethel and Edward enjoyed boating, swimming, and fishing with family and friends at their cottage on the Salt River in New Baltimore since the 1950's. In 1977, Edward retired and the two were fortunate to build their retirement home there which Ethel lived in until 2012.

Ethel was a beautiful dancer, a 200 average bowler, and a highly competitive card player… whether doing the Polka at weddings or playing Poker with her grandsons, Ethel's zest for life was unbeatable. Ethel played Pinochle and later Mahjong well into her 90's. Ethel was also a huge animal lover, owning dogs most of her life.

A bright light was shone on everyone she came into contact with. Ethel encouraged and inspired many. As a resident at NorthPointe Woods and PineView for the past six years, Ethel will surely be missed as she chatted with everyone on her daily walks.

Funeral services to celebrate Ethel's life will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 27th at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D. Avenue (M-89), Richland. Ethel will be buried alongside her beloved husband, Edward at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
