Frederick S. Moorhead, 86, of Battle Creek, died at Heartland Health Center on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.
Fred was born in Erie, PA to Douglas and Helen (Patterson) Moorhead on December 6, 1926. He was raised in North East, PA, received his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Case-Tech in Cleveland, OH and attended Virginia Military Institute and Penn State University. He served during WWII with the U.S. Army. After 40 years he retired from Grand Trunk Western Railroad. He was previously employed by Canadian National Railroad, 25 years for Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad in Dearborn; and Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad and Lehigh Valley Railroad both in Pennsylvania.
Fred was united in marriage to Roberta A. Gillespie on July 14, 1951 at Church of the Covenant in Erie, PA. Surviving are his wife, Roberta; two daughters, Wendy J. (Christopher) Adam of Bondi Junction N.S.W., Australia and Margaret L. (Michael) Lane of Grapevine, TX; a son, Thomas F. (Mary Beth) Moorhead of Williamston, MI; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Sean O'Gorman) Adam, Murray (Aliza) Adam, Sean (Amanda) Moorhead, Caitlyn Moorhead and Matthew Lane; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Janet (Jack) Chapman of Philadelphia, PA; and two brothers, Douglas (Marlene) Moorhead of North East, PA and Stephen (Evelyn) Moorhead of Toronto, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Elder and resident engineer. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Fred enjoyed reading history, humorous movies, and painting pictures of trains which meant something to his life. He had a discerning view of all railroad history and an extensive library on that topic. He was an loyal sports fan and followed the stock market with the same enthusiasm.
Funeral services will be officiated by Rev. Patricia Weatherwax at the First Presbyterian Church 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013. Military honors and interment will be held at 12:00 noon at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Refreshments and fellowship will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home.
