Gabino Garcia passed away at home in Battle Creek, MI on January 22, 2017 at the age of 88. Gabino is predeceased by his grandson's Ryan Perish-Garcia, Michael Barroso and Great-granddaughter Lilliana Gwillim. Gabino is survived by the love of his life Julia, whom he married in Edcouch, TX 68 years ago. This union was blessed with 10 surviving children: San Juana (Enrique)Rojas of Edcouch, TX; Armando (Maria de Jesus) Garcia of Battle Creek, MI; Rosita Garcia of Battle Creek, MI; Guadalupe (Lucy)Garcia of Battle Creek, MI; Lusiano (Barbara) Garcia of La Porte, TX; Maria Garcia (Guadalupe Sepulveda) of Roscoe, TX; Julia (Arnulfo)Rodriguez of Edcouch, TX; Martin (Tracy) Garcia of Battle Creek, MI; Oralia Garcia of Battle Creek, MI; JoAnn Garcia of Battle Creek, MI; 33 Grandchildren; 44 Great-Grandchildren & 1 Great-Great-Grandchild.
Gabino was a very active member of the Hispanic community. As President of La Raza Unida, in the late 1960's into the mid 1970's, he petitioned in Lansing, MI for the Bilingual Program to be integrated into the Battle Creek Public Schools, also advocating to shed light on the discrimination and the injustice that was prominent in housing, employment and education.
A visitation with the family is planned for 6:00 â 8:00 pm Thursday, January 26th at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 105 Capital Ave. N.E. Battle Creek, Michigan 49017. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on 1:30 pm Friday, January 27th at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 112 Capital Ave. NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017. Interment will follow at Mt.
