Gary Dean Hicks, Sr.

May 17, 1931 — June 23, 2016

Gary "Bud" D Hicks Sr, age 85, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016 at his home. Born on May 17, 1931 in Vermontville, Michigan to James Ezra Hicks and Dorothy Shellenberger.

On his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Providence CL82 from 1948-1949 and was honorably discharged May 1, 1950. Bud worked for CN/Grand Trunk Railroad as a machinist from June 1976 and retired January 1998.

He was always "tinkering" on something and he and his wife Bev loved animals and enjoyed taking care of their cats and dog. Bud raced at Butler Motor Speedway dirt track in the 1960's in car number 125.

In November 1952, he married Eleanor Sharpsteen; the marriage ended in divorce and she passed away in 2010. He married Beverly Smith Ellsworth in May 1975 and she passed away in August 2007.

He is survived by 7 children; Mary (Chris Miller) Guthrie, Dora (Bob) Fast, Don (Cyndi) Hicks, Marlene (Al) Avery, Gary (Laura) Hicks Jr, Mike Hicks, Roberta (Joe) Wathen and 3 step-children; Debra Canell, Vicky Rios, and James Ellsworth and many grandchildren, step grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Also, Bud is survived by a half-sister, Rose Marie Roberts.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and son, Robert "Robb" Hicks, in 2006 and 2 step-daughters, Tojnia McGuire in 1981 and Chiquita Garrett in 2001.

The Graveside Service to celebrate Gary's life will be held on Thursday, July 7th at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with the United States Navy Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard bestowing full military honors.
