GEORGE WILLIAM EWING
3.10.1933 – 1.09.2025
Born on March 10, 1933, in Muncie, Indiana, GEORGE W. EWING was a proud resident of Battle Creek, Michigan, for over 62 years. The eighth child of Jesse Raymond and Alma Margaret Schwartzrock Ewing, he graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1951.
George proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the 40th Infantry Division and later with the 8th Army Finance Division. He earned several distinctions, including the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Korea Presidential Unit Citation. As a graduate of the Army Finance School, he received his honorable discharge at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Following his military service, George pursued higher education at Ball State University, Indiana Business College, and the American Institute of Banking.
In 1956, George married Georgianna Cooper in Muncie, Indiana. Although they later divorced, he found love again and married Marilyn Fitzgerald Beatty in 1981 in Battle Creek, Michigan.
George built a successful career in finance and banking, working as a loan officer for Security National Bank of Battle Creek before opening his own business, Ewing Motorhome and Trailer Sales in 1967, which he led until his retirement.
An active member of his community, George held a variety of leadership roles such as Past President of the Battle Creek Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and Exalted Ruler of the Battle Creek Elks Lodge 131. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 298 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
George had a passion for travel, especially by RV, and devoted much of his time to his family's genealogy. He served as Chair of the Ewing Family Association, an organization committed to Ewing genealogical research. During his winters in Florida, George was an active participant at Advent Lutheran Church in Boca Raton.
He cherished his large and loving family, which included four children: Wende L. Askins (Robert) of Warsaw, KY; Douglas Ray Ewing (Mary Jane); Thomas J. Ewing (Stephanie) of Syracuse, IN; and Amy D. DeVries (Robert) of Boca Raton, FL. He also had two stepchildren, Michael J. Beatty and Sally J. Beatty of Battle Creek, MI; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his son Douglas Ray Ewing, his first wife Georgianna, his second wife Marilyn, his siblings, and his parents.
George’s family would like all their family and friends to know that George’s funeral and burial of his cremains will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery July 3, 2025. All those attending are asked to arrive at the cemetery at 11:40 a.m. for a 12:00 p.m. service. Following services at Fort Custer National Cemetery, there will be a celebration of life in George’s honor from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Base Bar and Grill located at 3905 W. Dickman Rd., Springfield (Battle Creek), MI. George’s family hopes you will join them to swap stories and share memories of this very special man.
