George R. Stone, 88, a resident of Pennfield Township, died May 21, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. George was born October 3, 1937 in Olivet, MI to James and Mabel (Custer) Stone. He graduated from Albion High School and went on to marry Phyllis Nash two years later in 1959.
George served his country honorably in the Army National Guard for 26 years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was in the 38th Infantry Division, 119th Artillery Battalion, Battery B. He worked for the Kellogg Company in their packaging department for 40 years, retiring in 1996. He also worked for Kellogg Community College as an Adjunct Instructor in the welding department.
George served as a Boy Scout leader in Troop #374, earning the Silver Beaver Award. He enjoyed spending time with family and serving on the Battle Creek Balloon Festival team for 30 years. He was passionate about photography and enjoyed metal detecting, playing the lottery, hunting, fishing, camping and going out to eat. George was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many. He will be truly missed.
George is survived by his two children, Sallie (Jody) Pease and Robert (Annette) Stone; grandchildren, Mindie and Mitch Bailey, Rashonda and Bradley King, Ariel Pease, Grace and Daniel Millisor and Eric and Mara Stone; great-grandchildren, Wade, Wyatt, Gabriel, Lillian and Sophia King, Mia and Milo Bailey and James Millisor; a brother, Mike (Teresa) Stone and many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis in 2005; his parents; and brothers, Ron (Kay) Stone, Gene (June) Stone and Tom (Rosemary) Stone.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, followed by a graveside service at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of George are asked to consider the Kellogg Community College RMTC scholarship fund.
