Gerald Paige “Red” Hollaway, 91, of Augusta, Michigan died peacefully at Heritage Upjohn Care on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
Gerald was born into this world with red hair on November 29, 1932, in Akin, Illinois, the son of Lloyd Otto and Lillian Frances (Williams) Hollaway. Red grew up in Akin, Illinois until junior high and then moved to Augusta with his family. After graduating from Augusta High School, Red honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, serving as a driver for military officers in Germany and Austria. When he returned from the service, he was employed at Eaton Corporation briefly and then began as a clerk at the Augusta Post Office. He served as the Postmaster for the Augusta Post Office and retired in the late 80’s after 30 years.
Gerald Paige “Red” Hollaway married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Holbrook at the home of her parents in Galesburg, Michigan on March 23, 1952. Surviving are his wife, Rosemary; three sons, Alan (Christine) Hollaway of Galesburg, MI, Dennis (Sharon) Hollaway of Augusta, Jon (Cathy) Hollaway of Turlock, CA; two grandsons, Matthew (Heather Ingram) Hollaway, Daniel Hollaway; a sister, Esther Sue Hollaway of Englewood, CO and a sister-in-law, Grace Hollaway of Traverse City, MI. Red was preceded in death by an infant (twin of Dennis) son, Steven Hollaway; Red’s parents; a brother, Donald Gail Hollaway and two sisters, Elizabeth Brooks and Ellen Jane Barker.
Red was a member of the Postmasters Association and the Augusta Ross Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Augusta Village Board and served as its president several times. He was an amateur radio operator for many years and bowled in the Saturday evening leagues years ago. At one time, he knew just about everyone in the Augusta area. Red will be remembered for his outgoing personality, treating everyone with respect and for being a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Friends will be received 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care, Augusta Chapel, where a funeral service to celebrate Red’s life will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Military honors and committal will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
