Glenn H. "Big G" Schulz

July 28, 1937 — December 15, 2014

Glenn H. "Big G" Schulz, age 77, of Battle Creek died peacefully on Monday morning, December 15, 2014. Glenn was born in Frankfort, Michigan on July 28, 1937 to Ormund and Elsa (Kuhrt) Schulz. Glenn grew up in Medina, OH with his three brothers. He graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH with a BS degree in biology, and received his Masters degree from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. While teaching and completing his graduate studies in Cleveland, he met Cathy, his future wife of 53 years, while participating in a young adult church group. They married in December 1961, while both were teaching in the Cleveland Public School System. They traveled extensively together for their first four years of marriage including a cross-country camping trip in their VW hatchback.

Glenn and Cathy's four children, Michael, David, Scott and Susan were born in Cleveland, Ohio. The family moved to Battle Creek, MI in 1974 where Glenn accepted the Principal position at Bellevue Middle School. In 1985, Glenn became the Athletic Director, at Battle Creek Lakeview High School. While in this role, he, along with the other city Athletic Directors, was instrumental in bringing to Battle Creek many of the high school state playoffs and championships. Glenn retired from the A.D. position at Lakeview in 1997, after serving 37 years in education. Throughout his career, Glenn took great pride in developing young people as students and athletes. He had a great respect for his teachers, coaches and support staff, many of whom have enjoyed his friendship long into retirement.

Glenn was an active volunteer in numerous service organizations and the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ of Battle Creek, where he served on many committees, the church council and was an usher. He was a long time member of the Cereal City Lions Club, serving numerous roles on the board. Most recently he was vice president of the ILR board. He felt strongly about serving and giving back to the community. He also remained very connected to the MHSAA and MIAAA organizations even after retirement.

Glenn, lovingly known as "Big G", was a proud husband, father and grandfather to ten amazing grandchildren. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling the world with Cathy, spending summers at the cottage in Northern Michigan, golfing with friends and sons, fishing and being with his family as much as possible. Glenn was a man of faith, sharing his values of love, commitment to family, and to God throughout his time with us. Glenn took the time to visit with friends, old and new, and he was someone you could always count on for a hug or to lend a hand when needed.
He is survived by his wife Cathy Schulz, and children Michael Schulz of Battle Creek, David (Kerry) Schulz of Battle Creek, Scott (Kara Johnson) Schulz of Traverse City, Susie (Troy Plumer) Schulz of Columbus; grandchildren Meghan, Madison, Lillian, Emily, Madelynn, David, Remington, Evan, Charlise and Colin; brother Dwight (Carol) Schulz, sister in law Deborah (Martin) Baumhower; twelve nieces and nephews, and 24 great nieces and nephews, as well as many special friends who have become family.

The family will receive friends 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 19, 2014 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home.
