Gordon C. "Gordy" Bishop of Springfield, MI
Gordy, age 93, died Saturday evening, January 4, 2014 at The Oaks of NorthPointe Woods, Battle Creek, MI.
Gordy, the son of Marion C. and Cora M. (Hart) Bishop, was born on September 9, 1920 in Battle Creek and was a lifetime resident. He served his country honorably during World War II in the United States Army seeing action in the European Theater of Operation towards the end of the War. Gordy retired in 1975 as a Supervisor for Eaton Manufacturing after 34½ years of faithful service. He was a 30 year member of the American Legion Post # 298 of Springfield; had been active in numerous bowling leagues of which he was the League secretary and he was a Board Member of the American Bowling Association. His other passion in life was playing a round of golf with his many friends where ever a course could be found!
In June of 1948 in Battle Creek, Gordy was united in marriage to the former, Barbara J. Brown, who preceded him in death on August 14, 1984. Surviving are his two sons, Gordon C. Bishop, Jr. and Randy J. (Wife-JB) Bishop, both of Battle Creek; three sisters, Beatrice Harper, Charlotte (Ray) VanDenburg and Donna Hoxie, all of Battle Creek and many nieces and nephews. Gordie was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, the mayor of Springfield, Adelbert Bishop on November 30, 2004.
The Funeral Service to celebrate Gordy's life will be held on Monday, January 13th at 1:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, with the Rev. Jeffrey C. Worden, Pastor of the Hickory Corners Bible Church, officiating. Entombment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Battle Creek. Friends will be received from Noon until service time at the funeral home on Monday. Immediately following the committal service, family and friends are invited to continue Gordy's life celebration with a time of fellowship and a luncheon at the American Legion Post # 298. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gordy's honor may be made to the American Legion Post #298, 228 North 20th Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015 or the American Cancer Society, 1400 West Milham Road, Portage, MI 49024.
