Harlan Floyd Jones, age 80, of Battle Creek passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021, after a brief illness. Harlan was born on July 22, 1941 to Floyd Arthur Jones and Mildred Bernice (Adams) Jones in Roseville, California. He graduated in 1959 from Roseville Union High School and continued his education at La Sierra College in Rocklin, California.
In 1964, Harlan enlisted with the United States Air Force where he worked on reciprocating engines and was a reservist for six years.
On April 10, 1965, Harlan married JaniceLynn Bold in Reno, Nevada, at the Chapel of the Bells. Both born and raised in California, Harlan and JaniceLynn relocated to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1966, for Harlan to work with the Defense Logistics Services Center where he served 38 years, retiring on January 2, 1998. After retirement, Harlan enjoyed a few years off before he returned to work. Harlan worked on grounds and maintenance at Custer Greens Golf Course and later at Meijer (Comstock-Gull Road) setting up store displays, and in the toy department, which he loved.
Harlan was an avid Amateur Radio Operator (KM8U) and member of 3905 Century Club. In 1992, Harlan received a United States of America County Award by CQ, the Radio Amateurs Journal, for contacting over 10,000 counties. Harlan also served as a volunteer with the National Association for Amateur Radio Emergency Service as a weather spotter. In addition to amateur radio, Harlan volunteered for the Red Barn Raceway Slot Cars at Gilmore Car Museum.
Harlan built a home for his family in 1975 and he took great pride in building and maintaining the home for the family he loved. He and JaniceLynn lived in the home together for 45 years and in April 2021, they celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.
Harlan was very active and in his free time enjoyed slot cars, racing, computers, genealogy, traveling, photography, and Christmas. On Saturday nights during the summer, you could find him helping his friends in the pits at Galesburg Speedway, attending Cruise the Gut, or traveling with JaniceLynn to relaxing destinations. Harlan attended Gull Lake Bible Church where he enjoyed his church family and his bible studies.
Surviving are his wife, JaniceLynn (Bold) Jones; daughter, Alyssa Jones (Greg Weever); brother, Richard B. (Cindy) Jones; granddaughters, Tiffani and Samantha Jones; and grandson, Daniel Jones. Harlan was preceded in death by his mother, father, and son, Brett Harlan Jones in 2011.
The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 1, 2021 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek. Funeral services to celebrate Harlan's Life will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at the Gull Lake Bible Church, 1491 Midland Drive, Hickory Corners, Michigan 49060. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gull Lake Bible Church or Gift of Life Michigan.
