Harley Hammond

Harley Clyde Hammond, 85, of Battle Creek died at The Oaks on Monday, February 4, 2013, after a long illness.
He was born in Bridgewater Twp., MI to Russell and Edith (Nichols) Hammond on July 10, 1927. Harley grew up in Ypsilanti, MI, where he was a 1945 graduate of Lincoln High School; attended Western Michigan University and later earned his degree in electrical engineering. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and with the U.S. Coast Guard. Harley was employed as the chief engineer at WBCK Radio Station 1949-1982. He was then employed at the Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center from 1982, until retiring in 1993.
Harley married Maxine Mae Reynolds in Grand Rapids, MI on July 8, 1946. Surviving are Maxine, his wife of over 66 years; a son, Richard (Sally) Hammond of Marshall; three daughters, Linda (Bill) Elliott, Doris (Gary) Hubbard and Barbara (Jeff) Shouldice all of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and a brother, John (Kiyoko) Hammond of Fairfield, CA. Harley was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Gilmore; brothers, David, Norman, Sam; his twin brother, Daniel and two granddaughters, Shawn and Tracy.
Harley was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of The Family Y Center and he enjoyed running.
Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2013. Military honors and inurnment will be held at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are by the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home.
