The long goodbye is over.  Harold D. Johnson, 91 years old, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 2, 2023 at Legacy at the Oaks in Battle Creek, Michigan.  The family is grateful for all of the care he received at the Oaks and through Promedica Hospice.  Harold was always a proud family man and together with the love of his life, just celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille (Lucy) A.  Johnson, his son John D. Johnson, of Battle Creek, Michigan, his daughter, Ann Johnson Pierson, Cle Elum, WA, five grandchildren & their families, including, three great grandchildren as well as by the many cherished and loved cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.

Harold was born in Peoria, Illinois and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago.  He graduated from Proviso H.S. and left Illinois to attend General Beadle College and then joined the Air Force, where he served for four years. After getting married and having two children, the family moved to Battle Creek, Michigan where he lived for the rest of his life.  Harold worked as a Project Manager at the Kellogg Company in the Engineering Department for over 28 years which gave him the opportunity to travel to and work with many Kellogg plants across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Japan.

As a young man, Harold was a basketball player and later in life he became an avid golfer, skier and tennis player.  After retirement he joined the Traveling Golf League and he and Lucy spent many winters in Florida on Anna Maria Island.

Harold was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Ivy; his brothers, Donald and Edmund; and sister, Ruth Byrnes.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. As a memorial, the family would like to invite you to buy your loved ones an ice cream treat, for as Harold often reminded us, it’s hard not to be happy when you eat ice cream. Arrangements by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek.  Personal messages for the family may be placed here at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.
